Understanding the nuances of Spanish conjunctions is crucial for advanced learners who wish to express themselves accurately and fluently. This is why today we will take some time with “Mientras vs. Mientras que“.
This two commonly used conjunctions, “mientras” and “mientras que”, often pose confusion due to their similar meanings. In this video podcast, we will delve into the distinctions between these two conjunctions, explore their various applications, and provide examples to clarify their usage. So, let’s unravel the intricacies of “mientras” and “mientras que” together.
You will learn how “Mientras” is a more versatile conjunction than “mientras que”. This last one conveys a different meaning, but well… I think you better listen to it, and do some exercise at the end 😉

I must admit that I sent these sentences to my native friends, all of them, to see what they thought. And I myself needed to think a lot.
La realidad es que cometemos errores aquí todos, los nativos, salvo contadas excepciones. La mayoría de mis amigos obtuvo una respuesta incorrecta a mi pregunta.
The reality is that we all make mistakes here, natives, with few exceptions. The majority of my friends gave an incorrect answer to my question.
2.1) El significado de “Mientras”. Ejemplos de su uso.
2.1) The Meaning of “Mientras”. Examples of “Mientras” Usage
La verdad es que con la palabra “mientras” nosotros hablamos de acciones simultáneas, como por ejemplo:
The truth is, with the word ‘mientras’ we talk about simultaneous actions, like for example:
“Mientras escribo este podcast, tú puedes escuchar música.” O
“Mientras escuchas este podcast, puedes tomar algunas notas.”
“While I write this podcast, you can listen to music.” Or
“While you listen to this podcast, you can take some notes.”
Acción simultánea.
En este sentido sería correcto, de las oraciones que he mencionado al principio decir:
Simultaneous action.
In this sense, it would be correct, from the sentences I mentioned earlier, to say:
“Mientras ves esa peli, yo voy a leer”.
“While you watch that movie, I will read.”
Pero la realidad es que también “mientras” para otro contexto: es el contexto de las comparaciones. En este sentido podríamos decir:
But the reality is that ‘mientras’ is also used in another context: the context of comparisons. In this sense, we could say:
“Mientras a mí me gusta más hacer podcasts, a mis alumnos les gusta más ver vídeos. Por eso hago video podcast”.
“While I prefer making podcasts, my students prefer watching videos. That’s why I do video podcasts.”
Y con respecto a las oraciones del principio, una vez más, podemos decir:

En este caso recuerda: estamos haciendo una comparación, no estamos dando dos acciones simultáneas.

Oye, y hablando de “soy más de café”, ¿conocías esta forma de expresarnos? Aquí te la dejo. La usamos para explicar que nos gusta mucho algo, somos muy aficionados (2) a algo.

¿Qué ocurre con “mientras que”? En realidad, deberíamos estar hablando de comparar dos situaciones diferentes, dos cosas diferentes. Así que, si queremos decir la frase por ejemplo que he mencionado antes, es correcta:
What about ‘mientras que’? In reality, we should be talking about comparing two different situations, two different things. So, if we want to say the phrase I mentioned earlier, it is correct:
“Mientras que a mí lo que más me gusta es hacer podcasts, a los alumnos lo que más les gusta es ver videos. Así que hago vídeo podcasts.”
“While what I like the most is making podcasts, what the students like the most is watching videos. That’s why I make video podcasts.”
Por tanto, y volviendo a mi pregunta al principio, “mientras que” solamente es usada para comparar dos situaciones diferentes. Por ello:
Therefore, going back to my initial question, ‘mientras que’ is only used to compare two different situations. That’s why:
“Mientras ves esa peli, yo voy a leer”.
Es solo correcta así, no puedes decir:
“While you watch that movie, I will read.”
Is correct in that way, and you can’t say:
“Mientras que ves esa peli, yo voy a leer”.
“Mientras que ves esa peli, yo voy a leer.”
Porque en este caso estamos hablando de dos acciones simultáneas. Por ello:
“Mientras que a mi hermana le gusta el té, yo soy más de café.” También es correcta.
Because in this case, we are talking about two simultaneous actions. That’s why:

En conclusión: “mientras” puede ser usada para acciones simultáneas, pero también para comparaciones entre dos situaciones diferentes. Recuérdalo, aunque los nativos no lo sabemos, pero esto es lo correcto.
In conclusion, ‘mientras’ can be used for simultaneous actions, but also for comparisons between two different situations. Remember, even though native speakers might not be aware of it, this is the correct usage.”
Frecuentemente, en conversación, alternamos (3) una y otra, una y otra, perdemos el sentido, el contexto, en donde sí podemos alternarla, y claro, acabamos confundiendo con textos y considerando que son correctas en todos los contextos. De hecho, el problema de por qué, en la encuesta que yo hice entre mis amigos, la mayoría obtuvo una respuesta incorrecta, es porque hemos estado tan acostumbrados a escucharla, a escuchar ambos contextos con “mientras” y “mientras que”, que ya lo hemos normalizado. No suena bien a los oídos, así que no detectamos el error.
Often, in conversation, we alternate between one and the other, one and the other, losing the sense, the context, where we can actually alternate them. And of course, we end up confusing them with texts and considering them correct in all contexts. In fact, the problem with why, in the survey I conducted among my friends, the majority gave an incorrect answer, is because we have become so accustomed to hearing both contexts with ‘mientras’ and ‘mientras que’ that we have normalized it. It doesn’t sound wrong to our ears, so we don’t detect the error.
