I noticed everyone is searching for ways to increase my vocabulary. In another video I will talk about this in a general way. In this one I intend to create a guide to learning Spanish vocabulary with a list of 9 verbs. Why is it something you should watch? Because we are going to replace basic verbs with sentences that you would say, with more advanced verbs. Specifically, we are going to replace four verbs: “ser”, “estar”, “tener” and “haber”. These verbs are on all the Spanish verb lists of basic verbs, right? You learn them at the beginning, when you learn to say your age, your profession, the food, … etc. However, if you are reading this, it is because you know that there are more verbs you should know. This is my idea: to introduce you to intermediate verbs to improve your vocabulary.

First, I would like to talk to you about something I consider important. I think you should express yourself with the vocabulary you know, with the vocabulary you have so far, with the one you are studying and practicing. Nowadays, we are victims of speed. Everything has to happen immediately. We all have a smartphone, so when we are speaking in Spanish and we want to express something exactly as we would say it in our native language, if we don’t have the words, we use our smartphone. Let me ask you something. How many times have you remembered a word a month later? I mean a word you looked up that one day when you told your teacher a sentence and you used your phone to look up that word you didn’t know?
You see what I’m getting at? Do you really think that’s the best way to build your vocabulary? I think you know better than that. But I also think we don’t have much patience in this era, don’t you think?
You’re all looking for fastest ways to increase your vocabulary. However, by looking for this, we are ignoring something tremendously basic. Traditional methods have always worked, and they still work. It’s really neither traditional nor non-traditional. It’s just that there are no great secrets to learning vocabulary in no time. The secret is to practice, repeat, repeat, practice, repeat. The secret is active learning. There is nothing else. We want to go from a sentence you would say with a basic vocab, to a more advanced word to replace those ones. And after this, we want to write them down, and keep using them, and using them in conversation.
So let’s practice. First we’re going to take 9 sentences with verbs that you learn in a beginner level. Then we’re going to look for another way, other verbs to spice up your Spanish. Once you learn them, of course you should use them. You must practice with them. They can’t stay stored there, as a T-shirt you bought a year ago, and never used. T-shirt and words stored in a hugh storehouse of useful and useless things. That’s our mind, isn’t it? These new words have to take priority.

However, in addition to this, in the link to the podcast version that I leave here, you have another exercise. With this exercise, you can replace more words in those sentences. In this case we are not talking about verbs exactly. So, on the one hand, 9 new verbs to memorize and use in the video. On the other hand, the second part of this practice: in the link here you go in and look for ways to replace other parts in those same sentences we used to learn the 9 verbs. We intend to replace more basic words, again, with intermediate vocabulary. What do you think?
Of course, as always, you will have the transcript in the same link, the translation and a vocabulary list.
Good luck and stop searching for fun ways to improve your vocabulary. This one is “fun”, it’s a game 😉 Challenge yourself.
